Kempower's New Charger Bridges the Gap Between Cars and Trucks

Kempower has unveiled a charging unit designed to solve one of the most expensive problems in electric freight infrastructure: how to serve passenger cars and heavy-duty trucks from the same physical site without building two separate systems. The Mega Satellite Flex, announced this week at the ACT Expo during the company's Unplug & Recharge event, supports both the established CCS standard at up to 560 kW and the emerging Megawatt Charging System at up to 1.2 MW. It is Kempower's first dispenser capable of switching between the two, and it arrives at a moment when the charging industry is trying to figure out how to serve two very different vehicle classes without duplicating capital costs.

Why One Dispenser for Two Standards Matters

CCS has been the dominant plug format for electric passenger vehicles for years, and it remains the default for most cars on the road today. But heavy-duty trucks need far more power to make electric operation practical on long routes, which is why the industry developed MCS, a standard engineered to push well beyond what CCS hardware can handle. The problem for site operators has been timing: building for cars alone risks obsolescence as truck volumes grow, while building exclusively for MCS ignores the much larger population of CCS-based vehicles already in service. A dispenser that handles both, drawing on the same underlying power cabinet, lets an operator serve whatever shows up at the plug without guessing which standard will dominate a given corridor. Technical Specifications and Real-World Trade-offs

The Mega Satellite Flex is rated for up to 1,500 amps on the MCS side and 700 amps for CCS, figures that reflect how much heavier-duty the megawatt standard needs to be to charge a truck battery in a commercially useful window. Cable length matters more than it might seem: the unit ships with a 5-meter CCS cable and a 2.7-meter MCS cable, lengths chosen to accommodate the different parking geometries of cars and trucks at a shared site. An optional payment terminal allows the dispenser to function as a standalone retail point, rather than requiring a separate kiosk. The hardware is also compatible with Kempower's existing distributed charging architecture, meaning operators who already run Kempower systems can add this unit without reworking their electrical backbone.

What This Signals for Charging Infrastructure

The appeal for site owners is utilization. A charging bay that can only serve one vehicle class sits idle whenever the wrong type of vehicle needs power, and idle hardware is the single biggest drag on return on investment for high-power charging equipment. By supporting both standards, plus newer 800-volt passenger EVs designed for faster charging, a single Mega Satellite Flex installation can theoretically stay busy across a broader mix of traffic. That flexibility becomes more relevant as MCS-equipped trucks slowly enter commercial fleets over the coming years, a rollout that will not happen uniformly across regions or fleet operators. Kempower's decision to build convertible hardware now, rather than waiting for MCS demand to solidify, reflects a bet that infrastructure flexibility will matter more than specialization during this transition period. The Mega Satellite Flex is expected to reach the North American and European markets in July 2026.
